How to dice an onion

Learning how to dice an onion is an essential kitchen skill. The right technique makes prep faster, safer, and helps reduce tears. This guide will show you how to cut an onion with confidence, whether you’re slicing for a salad or dicing for a stir fry.

Step 1

Place the onion on a stable cutting board. Cut off the top (stem end) of the onion.

Step 2

Slice the onion in half lengthwise, cutting through the root.

Step 3

Peel off the outer skin and any tough or dry layers.

Step 4

Place one half of the onion flat side down on the cutting board. Hold the onion steady and make 2–3 horizontal cuts into the onion, starting from the side opposite the root and stopping just before the root to keep it intact.

Step 5

Make a series of vertical cuts into the onion, with your knife pointing toward the root. Space the cuts evenly, depending on how fine you want the dice. Again, do not cut through the root.

Step 6

Finally, dice the onion by cutting across the vertical slices at a right angle, starting from the opposite end to the root. The onion will fall into small, even pieces. Once done, cut off and discard the root.

Step 7

Safety tips:

  • Always use a sharp knife. A dull knife requires more force and increases the risk of slipping and cutting yourself.
  • Keep your cutting board stable by placing a damp cloth or paper towel underneath it to prevent it from sliding.
  • Use the ‘claw grip’ with your non-dominant hand to hold the onion. Curl your fingers inward to keep them safe from the knife blade.
  • Work slowly and carefully, especially when making horizontal cuts, to avoid injury.
