How to dice and chop garlic

Instead of reaching for pre-chopped garlic, store fresh bulbs in a cool place and follow these easy steps to learn how to cut garlic. Whether you’re mincing for dressings or chopping for stir-fries, fresh garlic will elevate your cooking without the hassle.

Step 1

Remove a clove from the garlic bulb. Place it on a stable cutting board and use the flat side of a knife to gently press down and crush the clove. This will help crack the outer husk.

Step 2

Peel off the outer husk to reveal the garlic clove.

Step 3

Slice the clove crosswise into thin, even slices.

Step 4

Rotate the clove 45 degrees and slice it crosswise again to create smaller pieces.

Step 5

To mince the garlic, use a rocking motion with your knife. Keep the tip of the knife on the cutting board and use the rear part of the blade.

Step 6

Safety tips:

A sharp knife requires less force and reduces the risk of slipping.

Use the ‘claw grip’ with your non-dominant hand to hold the garlic. Curl your fingers inward to keep them safe from the blade.

When pressing down on the garlic clove with the flat side of the knife, ensure your hand is positioned away from the blade to avoid injury.
