How to steam veggies

Steaming is one of the simplest and healthiest ways to cook vegetables while preserving their nutrients, colour, and flavour. All you need is a pot, a steamer basket, and your favourite veggies.

Step 1

Fill a saucepan with water, ensuring the water level is below where the steamer basket or colander will sit. Bring the water to a boil.

Step 2

Place a steamer basket or metal colander/strainer into the saucepan, making sure it does not touch the boiling water.

Step 3

Add the cut cauliflower to the steamer basket. Cover the saucepan with a lid and steam the cauliflower for 3 minutes.

Step 4

Carefully remove the lid, be careful of the steam that will escape to avoid burns. Add the cut broccoli to the steamer basket.

Step 5

Replace the lid and continue steaming for another 3 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender but still vibrant in colour.

Step 6

Safety tips:

  • Be cautious when removing the lid, as hot steam can cause burns. Open the lid away from you.
  • Use oven mitts to handle the hot lid and steamer basket.
  • Ensure the water level is not too high to prevent it from boiling over the top of the saucepan or touching the steamer basket or metal colander/strainer.
  • Keep an eye on the water level to ensure it doesn’t evaporate completely during steaming.
