How to grill on a stovetop

Learning how to grill on a stovetop is a simple way to achieve that delicious, chargrilled flavour without needing a barbecue. With a hot pan, a splash of oil, and a bit of sizzle, you can grill everything from meat to veggies.

Step 1

Place a grill pan on your stovetop and set the heat to high.

Step 2

Once the pan is hot, add a small amount of oil (about 1–2 teaspoons) and swirl it around to coat the raised ridges of the pan evenly. Let the oil heat up until it starts to shimmer and sizzle slightly.

Step 3

Carefully place the food you want to grill onto the raised ridges of the pan. Cook the food on one side until grill marks appear, then flip it over and cook the other side until it’s done to your liking.

Step 4

Safety tips:

  • Use long-handled tongs to flip the food, keeping your hands away from the hot pan.
  • Be careful when adding oil to a hot pan, as it can splatter. Consider using an oil with a high smoke point, such as vegetable or canola oil.
  • If the pan becomes too smoky, reduce the heat or remove it from the burner temporarily to cool down.
  • Never leave the pan unattended while grilling, as the high heat can cause food to burn quickly.
