International Legends of League inspire healthy living in the Torres Strait

From 6-8 November 2025, the International Legends of League event brought sport, community, and health promotion together across the Torres Strait, with Health and Wellbeing Queensland proudly supporting the annual weekend of competition.
Rugby league legends were warmly welcomed to Thursday Island by Mayor Elsie Seriat OAM before visiting Badu, Mabuiag, Horn and Erub Islands. At schools, players encouraged students to make healthy lifestyle choices through nutritious eating and regular physical activity. They also spent time with elders at aged care facilities and met patients at Thursday Island Hospital, creating memorable connections across generations.
“The Legends of League event is a great example of how sport can bring people together and promote health and wellbeing,” said Alex Holloway, A/Director of Strategic Partnerships at Health and Wellbeing Queensland. “It’s such a fantastic opportunity to connect with communities in a really meaningful way.”
Health and Wellbeing Queensland also used the event to engage with key partners, including Community Enterprise Queensland (CEQ) and Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service, to continue vital conversations about food security and wellbeing in the region.
Adding a fun and inspiring element for children, Under 10s sprint races were held at halftime, with the winning boy and girl each receiving signed jerseys.
“Watching the kids light up with excitement was truly unforgettable – it’s experiences like that that spark healthier habits for the future,” Mr Holloway said.
