10,000 ways to beat the festive season slump

The holiday season puts a dent in all healthy habits but none more than being physically active, new research shows.

When asked what healthy changes would be easiest to implement in December, Queensland adults say they struggle with doing more physical activity compared to previous months.

The Kantar survey, commissioned by Health and Wellbeing Queensland, also reveals only half of Queenslanders are doing some form of physical activity every day in December.

Health and Wellbeing Queensland Clinical Nurse Consultant Sally Russell-Hall said while the holidays were a time to celebrate and relax, remaining as active as possible could help people maintain a healthy weight and improve their wellbeing.

‘Throughout December, we’re more likely to indulge in festive foods that are high in sugar, fat and salt,’ she said.

‘Doing a little bit of physical activity every day can help you maintain a healthy weight and reduce the anxiety and stress some people feel throughout the holidays.’

10,000 Steps program manager Anetta Van Itallie said counting down to Christmas by tracking your steps and walking was an easy way to keep active and offset some of the food and drink festivities.

‘Being active doesn’t mean getting an expensive gym membership – it’s about moving your body as often as possible in a way that feels good for you and fits into your everyday lives,’ she said.

‘It may look a little different to your normal habits but every step counts and walking to achieve your daily step goal, 10,000 steps or otherwise, is something you can do for free with friends and family.

‘Walking after eating also aids digestion, which can be just what you need after a big Christmas meal.’
