Good mental health is essential for a happy and fulfilling life, influencing how we manage challenges and build relationships.
To demonstrate the Queensland Government’s commitment to improving the mental health and wellbeing of all Queenslanders, it has released Thriving Lives, Connected Communities: Queensland’s Commitment to Mental Health and Wellbeing (PDF, 9MB).
This Commitment takes a deliberate wellbeing approach to build the foundations for good mental health and is the first step in the Government’s commitment to developing a population-wide, mental health and wellbeing strategy and action plan. It sets the direction for new action and investment across three focus areas of Collective, Community and Individual wellbeing.
Thriving Lives, Connected Communities was developed by Health and Wellbeing Queensland in partnership with the Queensland Mental Health Commission. Broad consultation was held with government and non-government agencies, peak bodies and community organisations, including people with lived-living experience of mental ill-health. Further consultation will be undertaken to support development of the strategy and action plan as part of future phases of work.
New Investment for Queensland Communities
Thriving Lives, Connected Communities highlights existing investment to support wellbeing and prevent mental ill-health. It is supported by a new $9 million Mental Health and Wellbeing Grants program, to be delivered across the next 3 years by the Queensland Mental Health Commission.
The grants program provides an opportunity for local projects and initiatives to be funded to meet local community needs. Eligible applicants will be able to apply for up to $150,000 for initiatives and activities that:
- support and promote mental health and wellbeing
- prevent mental ill-health through enhancing protective factors and reducing risk factors
- encourage early help-seeking
- improve mental health, wellbeing, alcohol and other drugs or suicide prevention literacy and understanding.
