Pick of the Crop is a whole-school healthy eating program to increase opportunities for Queensland primary school children to learn about and consume vegetables and fruit.
Program Inclusions
Pick of the Crop empowers schools to choose locally agreed actions, based on five priority components:
Farmer and food connections
Teaching and learning programs
Vegetables and fruit at school
Healthy school environments
Parent connections
Pick of the Crop will work with schools to action their priorities. Supported by local project coordinators, the pilots will be implemented in primary schools across each region of Bowen, Bundaberg and Logan.
Program Benefits
Pick of the Crop supports Queensland primary schools to boost children’s intake of vegetables and fruit through locally agreed school actions.
Healthy habits adopted early in life assist bringing these habits into adulthood.
With only 6% of Queensland children aged 8 – 11 years eating the recommended amount of five serves of vegetables every day, Pick of the Crop aims to improve these statistics and more importantly, support student learning and improve the health of Queensland children.
Up to 19,000 students in 60 schools will be reached during the pilot of Pick of the Crop in the three pilot regions.
