How to cook dried lentils or pulses

Learning how to cook dried lentils or pulses is an easy way to add more plant-based protein and fibre to your meals. They’re budget-friendly, filling and cook quicker than you might think. With just water, a saucepan and a quick rinse, you’ll have tender, tasty lentils ready to use in salads, pasta dishes, soups or anything in between.
Method
Step 1
Rinse your lentils in a strainer or sieve until the water runs clear.

Step 2
In a saucepan, combine the lentils with water and bring to the boil.
Step 3
For every cup of lentils, 2 cups of water is needed.
Step 4
Reduce the heat, cover and let it simmer, stirring every few minutes.
Step 5
Cook for 15-20 minutes or until the lentils are tender (but not mushy).
Step 6
Pour out the saucepan contents through the strainer or sieve to drain the lentils.
