How Maureen transformed her health for her family at 75, through Logan Healthy Living

When 75-year-old Maureen Trainor walks into the Logan Healthy Living centre in Meadowbrook in South-East Queensland, she’s greeted with warm smiles from the friends she’s made along her health journey. Eighteen months ago, she never imagined she’d feel so strong, confident or connected.

A mother of 3 and grandmother of 6, Maureen had already achieved an extraordinary milestone – losing 75 kilograms in recent years. But she knew her journey wasn’t over. With type 2 diabetes running in her family, she feared she was heading towards a diagnosis of her own.

‘I want to be around for my grandchildren,’ she says. ‘I knew I had to take control of my health before it took control of me.’

That determination led her to Logan Healthy Living, a no-cost, community-based program supporting people living with, or at risk of, type 2 diabetes.

Support from the whole team

Jo Munro, Health and Wellbeing Queensland’s Lead for the Logan Healthy Living program, says, ‘One of the strengths of this innovative program is its fantastic team of allied health professionals who make sure that everyone feels welcomed and supported.

The program aims to empower locals to improve their health and wellbeing while easing growing pressure on Logan Hospital. So far, the program has helped more than 800 Logan residents, so it’s taking positive steps to reduce the impacts of chronic disease in the area.’

Maureen completed the 12-month program but hasn’t slowed down. She still attends the centre 2-3 times a week for gym sessions, continuing the habits she built with the program’s guidance.

‘The program has given me the tools to change my life,’ said Maureen. ‘Diet, exercise, education, ongoing support – it’s all there. And I’ve made wonderful friends along the way. It has been one of the best decisions I’ve made – for me, and for my family.’

Her story reflects the heart of Logan Healthy Living: empowering people with knowledge, community connection and the practical tools they need to take charge of their wellbeing.
