These supplements do not need to be combined or taken as part of an expensive antenatal vitamin. Budget-friendly options are just as effective and should be encouraged to keep supplements affordable over time.<\/p><p>Folate is essential for DNA development, cell growth and tissue formation. Taking a folic acid supplement before pregnancy greatly reduces the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida and anencephaly.
